In 1975 Russell was inducted into the HOF he would be the first African-American to do so but turned it down and boycotted it for 44yrs. Russell felt there were African-American players before him who deserved to be the first. In 2019, he finally accepted the award a month after Chuck Cooper was finally inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame.
